Character History : Niccolo Sulla was born to a poor woman in the city. A prostitute her religious beliefs prevented her from aborting the unwanted child, but she still resented the burden he represented. Niccolo never knew his father and grew up in the harsh streets. Though not particularly strong or athletic, he was very smart and quickly learned how to survive on the streets and after repeated abuse from his mother and her various ‘clients’ he ran away at 10 years old. He survived on his wits but was caught trying to steal from a wealthy shop owner. The man took pity on the young boy and took him in, he provided him with a place to live and an education. Niccolo became a model student and began to excel in his studies. He grew close to his new father and had begun to see that not all men were bad, but then tragedy struck. The Merchant who had grown wealthy had also made enemies due to some of his more illicit business dealings. These enemies murdered the man and framed the now teenage boy. The man’s family members who saw the boy as a freeloading outsider had no problem believing this and young Niccolo found himself imprisoned. Within the prison he was confined in a cell next to a raving lunatic, or at least that is what the man sounded like to him initially. Niccolo realized the man next to him had started to lose his mind after years of imprisonment, but that he knew secrets of knowledge the young man had never contemplated. He began to listen to the old man in his ravings and soon befriended him. The man was a wizard and taught him simple spells and formulae that the young man learned to scribe on the walls and cell of his floor. He used this power to free himself from his imprisonment. He went forth in the world and continued his secrets of the arcane arts and found he had a talent for the art of Necromancy. Niccolo decided that life was cruel and short for those that put their trust in other men. He re-invented himself as a scholar and did whatever he had to do to climb from poverty to status as an influential advisor attached to the staff of Govenor Fril who has set out to cross the sea and make contact with a lost outpost.
Niccolo wishes to see this new land and uncover it’s arcane secrets for his own. Niccolo is selfish and seeks power, so is by definition evil, however he is not evil for evil’s sake. He views the people he meets as valuable assets that can be manipulated or used to achieve his ends, but does not murder lightly or seek to oppose their goals unless of course they come into conflict with his own. He avoids violence if at all possible and uses subterfuge and subtlety to achieve his goals but will assist those he finds necessary for his aims. In other words, he wants this expedition to succeed, and he will need the support and protection of his fellow party members to survive and uncover the secrets he is after, however, if he has to chose between himself and another person, life has taught him the hard way to look out for number one.
